Summer Camps for High School Students

The Department of Computer Science at SXU is offering Summer Camp for Girls and Android Apps (for girls and boys) during summer 2011. This is the second summer camp for girls. See the website for the hugely successful Summer Camp 2010.
Computer Summer Camp for Girls
Activities will include:
- Scratch (free download available at http://scratch.mit.edu) After the workshop students will be able to use this easy-to-learn programming tool to create animated stories and games.
- csunplugged (http://www.csunplugged.org), a collection of activities that teach Computer Science through engaging games and puzzles that use cards, string, crayons and lots of running around.
- Widespread usage of the Internet, especially by children and teens, raises a number of social and ethical concerns, including privacy, security and intellectual property ownership issues. Students will have an opportunity to discuss these important issues as well as computing etiquette.
- Campers will learn about computing careers and have the opportunity to shadow women in professional computing positions on the Saint Xavier campus.

Date: June 13-17, 9am–2pm (Lunch not provided)
For: Incoming freshmen through seniors, girls only.
Place: St. Xavier University, Warde Academic Center, Room S104
Price: Free. Funding is provided by a National Science Foundation grant awarded to Saint Xavier University.
Space is limited. Register by June 1.

Android Apps (for girls and boys)
Learn to build Android applications using Google’s App Inventor. No prior programming or design experience necessary since we will use an easy drag-and-drop environment. Participants do not need an Android device as all of the work will be completed using an emulator. Space is limited to 20.

For: Incoming freshmen through seniors, boys and girls from any area high school.
Place: St. Xavier University, Warde Academic Center, Room S104
Price: $75. Space is limited. Register by July 8.
