I grew up in Bayonne, N.J., where I attended Bayonne High School, graduating in 1967. Directly after high school, I went to Douglass College, where I majored in mathematics and graduated in 1971. I studied for a secondary mathematics teaching credential at the University of California - Berkeley and taught high school math in the San Francisco Bay Area for several years. I then moved to Chicago, Illinois in 1978, where I eventually enrolled in a graduate program in computer science at the University of Illinois at Chicago, from which I received my Master of Science and Doctor of Arts degrees (1992).

I have been a faculty member in the Department of Mathematics and
Computer Science at Saint Xavier University since 1986.
