Description  This course serves as an introduction to computer literacy. In addition to hands-on experience with word-processing, spreadsheet, presentation, web page authoring and web browsing software applications programs, the course will cover the history of computing, an overview of hardware and software components and an examination of the social impact of computer technology.

Philosophy  Regardless of your major, and regardless whether you are not sure about your intent to proceed with your education, this course is of a great importance for you. This course is designed to provide students of all majors and non-majors with basic and important knowledge in Information Technology (IT) to improve their productivity in life. It provides the knowledge and tools that are necessary for students during their educational and life experience. The knowledge you learn in this course can be used at school or work to improve and speed your productivity. It can be used at home to educate your self and/or your kids. An introduction to Software and Hardware will be provided. Hands-on experience will be emphasized, using Microsoft office 2003 ( Word, Excel, Power Point, Access). An understanding to the networking concept in general will be covered in this course. An introduction to the Internet and related issues will be provided with hands-on experience.

 

Prerequisite None. Credit for this course will not be given to a student who has previously completed Business 242.

Supplies       Each student is expected to bring both of the text books to class at all times. Students must have the appropriate storage devices (ex. Zip disk, floppy, USB Flash Drive, ..etc.) to save their work.

 

Objectives    The student will:

1.      Understand the definition of the computer system;

2.      Learn about the major components of a computer system;

3.      Develop an understanding of the meanings of software and hardware;

4.      Understand the difference between system software and application software;

5.      Learn how to manage and save files and folders;

6.      Learn how to use important application software such as WORD, EXCEL, and POWER POINT;

7.      Understand the general concept of networking;

8.      Understand how to use the Internet and the e-mail;

9.      Understand how to maintain and protect a personal computer against intruders;

Attendance: will be taken on daily basis, both for the lecture and the lab.

 

Participation: grade will be determined based on your completion to in-class assignments and your role in the discussion process in the class. 

 

Lab assignments: will be assigned on weekly basis to emphasize the material covered in that particular week. Usually, you will have one week to complete the lab assignment, unless if stated otherwise.  All homework assignments are to be submitted on the specified day. Late work will be penalized at the rate of 50% if it is turned in any time up to the next class meeting after it is due. After that time, it will not be accepted. However, if the solution of the lab assignment is provided on the due date, then no late submission will be accepted.

 

Final Project: Each individual student is required to complete a well documented project. The project will be assigned by the instructor, and it should allow students to incorporate and implement the knowledge and tools that are covered in this course. Students will be responsible to hand in both the soft and hard copy of the project, and present the project to the instructor.

 

Exams: All exams will be announced at least one week in advance. No makeup exams will be given, unless for exceptional circumstances, documentations will be required to prove those exceptional circumstances. Makeup exams will be different from the original exam.
