Introduction

Programming with Alice logo

The attraction to using Alice, and more specifically the Storytelling version of Alice, for our project was that it offered a means of introducing programming terms and concepts without concern for syntax.  The graphic 3D nature of the objects and the worlds they reside in also made Alice an attractive and non-threatening means of introducing programming to teenage girls. Alice offers a drag-and-drop, highly visual means of adding objects, creating events and writing and implementing methods and functions to create virtual worlds.  Storytelling Alice was chosen for the Mother McAuley project because it includes more built-in methods than Alice 2.0, providing a less complicated and more immediate way to put objects into action in a world.

Our SXU student group met with the McAuley students once per week for six consecutive weeks during Spring ’08 semester.  The program was offered to Mother McAuley students as an after school activity and was advertised through flyers posted at the school.  Guidance counselors at the school also recommended that particular girls enroll in the Alice sessions.
