SXU-Brother Rice Collaboration, Fall 2010

Faculty Instructors: Jean Mehta & Christopher Harr

Student Instructors: Michal Bieniek, Alex Lukasik, Miles Nowak, and Patrick Seiter.

For this project, student instructors first learned to program Lego Mindstorm robots and them developed a series of exercises for the six-week workshop.

Each week SXU students were the instructors, serving as role models and mentors while teaching the Br Rice students to program.

Students built the robots, adding light and touch sensors .....

...and learned to program them

In the last two weeks they programmed the robots to play soccer. The field 'boundary' was white, so if the robot sensed a white stripe it turned around. Different colored stripes in front of the goals enabled the robot to sense whether it was close to the opponent's goal and should shoot. Proximity sensors enabled the robot to sense when it was close to an opponent and should turn in order to avoid a collision. This last feature didn't work very well - or the students didn't program it correctly, maybe preferring to let the robots bump into each other!
